This sculpture is fashioned from a single large fossilized walrus tusk from the Bering Sea. Excavated on the St. Lawerence Island, it's age can be from 1000-5000 years. The complete tusk shows the original outside "skin" on the lower areas, to contrast the rich multi-colored inory inside.
A pair of Macaws perch atop a rainforest scene comprised of blossoms, leaves and vines. The hibiscus flowers are carved from seperate pieces of high color ivory and inlayed into the tusk and base. Datura flowers carved from different shades of mother-of-pearl are pegged into the forest scene using multi colored sapphires set in 22 karat gold.
The base is a large piece of Siberian jet with one fossilized ivory hibiscus set in front. The natural texture of the jet seam is left on the top portion, combined with the polished and textured carved areas.
The birds are modeled after the artist parrot in residence, Jomo, a large male Blue & Gold Macaw who keeps watch on the work studio.
